Here, we introduce the series of white papers (WPs) on ASTRO-H science.

The purpose of this series of WPs is twofold. One is to demonstrate the new capabilities of ASTRO-H in solving many outstanding problems in astrophysics. The X-ray spectra taken with the high spectral resolution Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS), a microcalorimeter instrument, combined with data from the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), an imaging CCD camera, Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) and Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) instruments are remarkable, and the WPs illustrate how this powerful combination will make possible new probes of the universe. Secondly, these WPs provide a basis for planning the initial observations of ASTRO-H (Performance Verification phase consisting of about 7 months of the observation time) and show some of the observational details required for successful Guest Observer proposals.

We are pleased to provide a series of 16 white papers (WPs), which describe the anticipated scientific results from ASTRO-H for a wide range of topics. The contents of the WPs are as follows:
